The visit of George IV to Dublin

1823

2021/59.1-2

Pair of souvenir prints commemorating the visit of George IV to Ireland in 1821 were engraved by Robert Havell & Son from paintings by Joseph Haverty which were themselves based on original eye-witness sketches by John Lushington Reilly. They were printed in London in 1823.

The second print depicts the embarkation of George IV from Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) on 3 September 1821. This view shows a large crowd, including a representation of the artist Lushington Reilly sketching on horseback, gathered at Kingstown Harbour and along the partially completed East Pier. In the background is Sandycove Martello Tower and Battery.
